Protocol CAL-SHC-001  •  Specific Heat Capacity Analysis

Welcome to the Materials Characterization Division. Unknown metal samples have arrived from procurement and must be identified before entering the production pipeline.

Use constant-pressure calorimetry to measure specific heat capacity, then cross-reference the result against our materials database to identify each sample.

► Standard Operating Procedure
  1. Drag the metal sample onto the analytical balance to record mass
  2. Note initial temperatures — sample is preheated to 100.0 °C
  3. Drop thermometer into calorimeter, then insert the sample — wait for equilibration
  4. Step A: Qw = mw × 4.18 × ΔTw
  5. Step B: Qmetal = −Qw  (enter as a negative number)
  6. Step C: c = Qw ÷ (ms × ΔTs) — round to 2 decimal places
  7. Step D: Identify the metal. One wrong answer ends the session!
