Purpose
Safety (for the real lab)
- Wear splash goggles the whole time. The bench won’t let you heat anything until your goggles are on.
- Heat iodine and naphthalene only in the fume hood with the fan on. Their vapors irritate eyes and lungs, and iodine stains.
- Hexane is flammable: keep it far from the hot plate, and pour it only into the organic waste.
- The hot plate and pie tin stay hot long after you turn them off. Silver chloride stains skin dark.
- Never taste or smell samples directly. Wash your hands when you finish.

How to use the bench (mouse, touch, or keyboard)
- Drag items with a mouse or finger, or tap / press Enter on anything to get a menu of what you can do with it. Tab moves between items; Esc closes a menu.
- Keys: 1 2 3 change station · G goggles · M particle view · P pause · H help · T tare the balance · S stir the selected tube · R rinse the electrodes. Dials: arrow keys ±1, Page Up/Down ±10.
- Melting point: drag a jar onto a pie-tin spot, put on goggles, and turn up the hot plate. For an exact value, load a capillary tube, heat slowly near the melting point, and press the mark buttons when you see melting start and when it is all liquid.
- Solubility: tare the balance, scoop about 0.20 g onto the weigh boat, pour it into a tube, add 5.0 mL of solvent, and stir.
- Conductivity: drag the tester onto a tube, a dish of dry solid, or a control beaker. Rinse the electrodes between tests.
