Purpose
Safety (for the real lab)
- Wear splash goggles. Boiling water and steam cause serious burns: keep your face and hands away from the bath.
- Move hot samples only with tongs or a test-tube holder, never your fingers. The hot plate stays hot after it is off.
- Lower the metal into the cup gently so hot water doesn’t splash.
- Lead is toxic: handle the lead sample with gloves or tongs and wash your hands when you finish.
- Wipe up spills right away; wet floors near hot plates are dangerous.

How to use the bench (mouse, touch, or keyboard)
- Drag blocks and the cup with a mouse or finger, or tap / press Enter on anything to get a menu of what you can do with it. Tab moves between items; Esc closes a menu.
- Keys: 1 2 3 change station · P pause · M particle view · H help · N what do I do now? · T tare the balance · S stir · L lid. The graduated cylinder is a dial: arrow keys ±1 mL, Page Up/Page Down ±10 mL.
- Prep: tare the balance and weigh each block. Fill the cylinder, pour it into the cup, and weigh the cup to get the water’s mass.
- Heat: put a block in the boiling-water bath and let it heat (⏩ Speed helps), then take it out with the tongs.
- Calorimeter: thermometer in, read the starting temperature, drop the block in, lid on, stir, and read the highest temperature on the graph.
